PPL-TPO stands for Pre-Paid Lease – Third Party Ownership. Helios Solar Investments leases a solar system on your roof to you. You prepay the first six years (72 months) of the lease at 70% of the system’s originally quoted price, which is 30% less upfront. In month 73, you have the option to buy the system and own it outright.
During the lease, Helios Solar Investments owns the system, which lets it qualify for a federal tax credit available to business owners of solar equipment. Helios passes that savings on to you as a 30% upfront discount. You don’t claim a tax credit yourself.
Helios Solar Investments is the program provider and owns the equipment during the lease. Helios Solar LLC designs, installs and services your system. Both companies have the same local owners. Keeping everything in-house is how we pass the most savings on to you.
Because we’re both the installer and the system owner, we pass along more of the savings than most national programs do. We’re interested in installing a great system for you, not in selling you a financing product. We’re also local: you can call, email or visit our Kalamazoo showroom any time you have questions.
Roof-mounted solar systems using specific qualifying equipment. Battery backup can be included. Ground-mounted systems don’t qualify.
Yes. Your roof should have at least 10 years of life left before it needs to be replaced. We’ll check your roof’s condition before installing. If it will need replacing soon, we may recommend replacing it first.
If your neighborhood has a homeowners association, you’ll need to submit the solar plan and layout to them for written approval.
70% of your system’s originally quoted price, paid when you sign your lease agreement. This prepays the first 72 months of your lease.
Example:
Original quoted price: $30,000
30% upfront savings: –$9,000
Prepaid lease payment: $21,000
There are no monthly lease payments during the first 72 months. Your prepayment covers them.
No. Helios doesn’t charge interest. The program has two flat payments: the prepaid lease payment upfront, and the optional purchase payment in month 73.
In month 73, you have the option to buy your system for up to 5% of the original quoted price. Once you buy it, you own the system and all of its warranties.
Example:
Original quoted price: $30,000
Purchase price in month 73: up to $1,500
Total paid if you purchase: up to $22,500 (75% of the original price)
Your lease continues and monthly lease payments begin. The program is designed for homeowners to take the 30% upfront savings and then buy the system in month 73. Most homeowners will find buying it is the better value.
You do, from the day your system is turned on. That includes Distributed Generation (DG) credits for extra energy sent back to your electric provider.
Not day to day. Your utility bill savings and any battery backup benefits are the same either way.
You do. You take full ownership of all the equipment in your agreement, plus all of its warranties.
Helios Solar maintains, services and monitors your system for the length of the agreement. You won’t be billed for maintenance. The one exception is removing and reinstalling the system if you choose to replace your roof.
Your agreement includes a fee schedule for removing and reinstalling your solar system if a roof replacement is needed during the lease. That’s why we check your roof’s remaining life before installing.
Solar panels, roof racking and microinverters are covered by the manufacturers’ 25-year warranties. Batteries carry a 10- or 15-year manufacturer warranty, depending on the brand. Helios Solar also provides a 25-year limited warranty on workmanship and installation. Separately, we provide a 25-year limited warranty against roof damage and water leaks at each roof penetration we make, including the area around it. When you buy your system, all warranties transfer to you.
Helios Solar will remain your service provider, but you’re free to choose someone else if you’d like.
Please don’t get on your roof. In Michigan, snow typically melts and slides off the panels within a few days, so the best approach is to let nature take care of it. If you think your panels need cleaning, contact us first. We need to discuss it and give written approval before any work is done.
Yes. Check with your insurance carrier to make sure the solar system is covered under your homeowner’s policy. Coverage must be for the full project cost, not the discounted price. Helios Solar Investments must be listed as a named insured, just as a leased car is insured by its driver.
Your agreement can be transferred to the buyer. Since you’ve already prepaid the lease, you may choose to factor that into your home’s sale price. The buyer signs an agreement with Helios Solar Investments to take over the program, including the month-73 purchase option. The transfer happens as part of the real estate closing, and we’ll help make it as smooth as possible.
For safety, solar-only systems automatically shut off when the grid goes down. This is called “anti-islanding.” Your panels won’t power your home until grid power returns.
A battery stores extra solar energy for nighttime, very cloudy days and power outages. When the grid goes down, the battery takes over seamlessly to power your home. If the battery runs out, the system shuts off and restarts once the sun is back. Battery systems can be designed to back up part of your home or the whole home.
We do. Helios Solar provides a turnkey installation. We submit all building and electrical permits and the interconnection application with your utility, and we schedule the final inspections.
For a typical residential installation it takes 1-2 days to complete, depending on the complexity of the project.
Choosing Helios Solar gives you access to an experienced, owner-operated local installer serving Kalamazoo, West and Southwest Michigan since 2009. Our Google review’s average 4.9 out of 5 stars.
